Brand Discovery Questions With Useful Follow-Ups

Brand discovery works best when people describe situations, audiences and trade-offs. ‘Modern, premium and approachable’ can mean very different things to different reviewers. The useful follow-up is where each quality should appear and what the brand should avoid doing.

Separate business context from visual preferences

First establish what the organization offers, who chooses it, and what those people need to understand. Then explore expression: voice, imagery and applications. This keeps a favorite color from becoming the explanation for the entire identity.

Ask whether the organization has existing brand material. Preserve approved source links and identify which elements are fixed, open to revision or simply old. A current logo is evidence of an existing system, not automatic proof that every aspect should be retained.

Who is your audience? What is happening when someone first looks for your service? The context of the first message.
Which brands do you like? What works in this example: hierarchy, tone, spacing or imagery?A specific principle without copying a competitor.
What makes you different?Which difference can you demonstrate with a product, process or example?Claims that can be supported.
What should the brand feel like?Where would that quality go too far?Boundaries for evaluating concepts.

Illustrative interpretation: a neighborhood repair service

ApproachableCustomers hesitate because they cannot describe the fault.Use plain explanations and welcoming first-contact language.
ExpertTechnicians explain options before starting work.Show the process and clear choices, subject to factual review.
Not corporateThe team wants local familiarity, but invoices must remain easy to read.Warm communication with consistent practical information.

Write a direction statement the team can challenge

For the illustrative repair service, a draft direction could be: ‘Make the first repair enquiry feel understandable and manageable. Explain the next step plainly and show the team's process. Keep essential service details easy to scan.’ This is a hypothesis for review, not a finished slogan.

Ask stakeholders which part they would change and why. If one person wants playful language and another wants formal authority, compare both against the customer's situation. Record the chosen boundary and the person who can resolve further disagreement. A list of every stakeholder's favorite style does not provide a usable approval standard.

Run the review in three passes

01

Confirm facts

Check the offer, audience and practical applications with the people who own them. Mark assumptions and unverified claims.

02

Agree expression

Select a small set of voice and visual principles, each paired with an example and a boundary.

03

Test applications

Review the principles against a real homepage heading, small logo placement and customer message before treating the direction as settled.

Questions people ask

Should we ask about competitors?

Yes, when the comparison reveals audience expectations or meaningful differences. Ask what to learn from or avoid, rather than inviting imitation.

Is a moodboard enough?

A moodboard can help express preferences, but it needs a written explanation of what each reference contributes and which constraints still apply.

How do we handle conflicting answers?

Record the disagreement, connect it to a customer situation, and ask the designated decision owner to resolve it. Do not quietly combine incompatible directions.
